Scrapbooking Ideas for Designing Two-Page Layouts with "Bracketing" | Get It ScrappedIn the recent GIS membership class Loving the Double Wide we saw several of our contributing teachers “bracketing” their two-page compositions. Specifically, they used elements at far left and far right of the two-page spread like bookends to contain and even ground the grouping.

Our Creative Team uses ideas shared in that class on their two-pagers here.

Katie Scott says, “While my 90 year old mother-in-law was in the hospital recently, my son and I stayed at home with my 94 year old father-in-law who has Alzheimer’s Disease and we spent a lot of time looking at old photos of Ethel that she sent him while he was serving in WWII.”

“Because my in-laws got married in secret as WWII was beginning, their first four years of marriage were long distance and their communication was via letters and photos. I, thus, used tags to bookend the design since they reminded me of the mail.  The tags also mimicked the piles of random old photos.”

Heather Awsumb says, “This page documents the basics of a trip to Chichen Itza in March with pictures from both our evening and daytime excursions.”

“I’ve bookended the design with two 4″ x 6” photos, one on the far left and another at far right. The bracketing photos created the rough boundaries of my band composition that extends across the two pages and “holds together” the smaller photos and elements in-between. ”

Karen Poirier-Brode says, “The story of the page is my grandson’s enjoyment of a lemon cupcake at a family birthday party.”

“I created bookends with strips of yellow-striped patterned paper at side of the two-page composition. I used a contemporary grey, white and yellow scrapbook page color scheme to emphasize the lemon cake flavor. The whimsical elements characterize the delight I have in everything about this guy.”

Devra Hunt says, “In these photos, my son is going into the ocean by himself for the first time. He was both afraid and excited at the same time.”

“I bookended the design in two ways. First, I repeated the diamond patterned paper in a more traditional way, on both outer edges of the layout. I also repeated the color red on both sides of the layout, but is it more prominent on the left. I used red as an accent on the right side. The result is a visual triangle of red across the two pages.”

Stefanie Semple says, ” This page is about my daughter’s annual changing-up-her-hairstyle event which occurs during the first week of the holidays. This year she changed it up quite a bit.”

“I bookended the design with doilies and mixed media spritzing on each side. The page is messy and artistic in a way that has a playful and busy vibe perfect for this stage of her teen years. The bands of paper running across the two sides with photos layered over support at each end and white space in the middle support the ideas of continuity along her life’s timeline: not everything can be seen, but this is a snapshot right now. ”

Gretchen Henninger says, “I made this layout to capture my love of Mont Saint Michel in France. ”

“Because I had so many “favorite” photos of differing orientations, I knew I would be working on a two page spread. The vertical columns on either side of the spread provide resting spots for my photo clusters and give the page structure.”

Carrie Arick says, “On this page, I’m telling the story of a birthday gift that delighted my husband.”

“I started my bookending brackets with wide bands of low-contrast striped papers on each end. I added ephemera and embellishments to create mirrored brackets around the edges of the two photos. This design simplified my embellishment choices and placement, and the bookend areas became points of interest.”

“I like to think of bracketing as visual ping pong. It keeps the eye moving through your page, but never off the canvas. The two halves of my page could stand alone, but the bracketing unifies the page.”
