Get the look of hand-crafted art with scrapbook page techniques for linocut looks. Linocut refers to a printing technique in which a design is cut from linoleum and then inked and pressed to the page. The Get It Scrapped Creative Team took inspiration from this collection of linocuts on Pinterest and then took their own routes to linocut looks.

use your Silhouette and a woodgrain cut file for a linocut-look background
Katie Scott said, “We don’t get out in the wilderness often enough, but did get a chance over spring break and this page records that.”
“The photos are Instagrams printed on my home printer and the “Wildness is a necessity” quote is by John Muir. I created the linocut look by cutting a woodgrain design on my electronic die cutting machine. I used two shades of pink because the page was about my daughter. The woodgrain motif is perfect for a about the outdoors.”

add digital layer styles to a primitive feather motif
Carrie Arick says, “This page tells the story of how one lovable, little princess of a kitten somehow ended up a bossy queen.”
“I created my linocut background using a primitive feather and a layer style to create one pink and one green feather. I then set down the first row of my pattern. I used the group function (you can use link option in Photoshop Elements) to duplicate my row of feathers quickly and then aligned them by eye. A hand linocut wouldn’t be perfect, especially if I did it, so the fact that the alignment isn’t perfect makes the linocut feel more authentic to me. The repetition of shapes and color is very strong, but the linocut effect keeps the page feminine because of it’s soft, inky feel. The pattern of the linocut also visually supports the concept of falling in line.”

hand-cut your own linocut-styled stamps
Christy Strickler says, “This is a photo of me with my best friends from high school.”
“I carved my own linocut images and stamped with them. Most linocuts use blues, reds and greens and I worked with blue and red ink. I stamped basic line and arrow patterns in shades of red and blue. I then returned to some of the images and stamped over the same image with grey ink. I love how this creates a fun band design upon which my photo rests.”

add a digital linocut-styled image to your page
Audrey Tan says, “This page documents our arduous journey from the UK to India. It took us 23 hours in total, with a layover at New Delhi airport for 9 hours. Needless to say, by the time we arrived at our destination, we were shattered! I added a digital owl linocut image to denote our night activity.”

make your own linocut stamp with Speedball products
Michelle Houghton says, “This is the view from the top of Diamond Head on Oahu, Hawaii.”
“I created my own linocut stamp, using supplies from Speedball. I then used Gelatos to stamp my linocut directly onto my cardstock. Traditional Hawaiian art work has the look of a block stamp or linocut to me, so it felt right to add the bold water and sunset stamp onto my page in a similar style. I also wanted to highlight the unreal brightness of the colors surrounding us on our trip so adding the vivid oranges and blues onto my stark white background really emphasized the amazing blues in the photos.”

get a layered linocut look by digitally blending striped and woodgrain elements
Amy Kingsford says, “This is a page about my unconditional love for my son. I brought together a variety of lined backgrounds for a linocut look: some digital brushes and some digital papers. I used blending modes and cutouts to create interest within the colors and shapes of the repeating lines.”
“I chose this technique for this particular page because my son reminds me of the beauty and wonder that exists in my life on a daily basis. And, like life, the linocut technique is a series of repetitions and fine lines–but hidden inside of its web is something truly amazing.”
